Baaldaar, founded in 2013, publishes children’s books in the Kurdish language. Our ambition is to encourage children to read and enjoy books, and also to stimulate parents and teachers to give children access to attractive and educational books. Magic happens when you give books to children: Eyes sparkle, smiles emerge, and imagination comes alive. That is the mission embraced by Baaldaar: to motivate children to have a lifelong, life-changing love of reading. This ignites a hunger for knowledge and a passion for learning. Our vision is a literate Kurdistan in which all children have access to books and discover the joys and value of reading.

Family of Readers programme for parents

When you empower parents, you empower children – That is the idea behind Family of Readers, our unique programme that helps parents develop the skills and confidence to take a leadership role in their children’s reading, learning, and love of books. Parents learn about children’s books, are taught how to read aloud to their children, and help plan and run a Baaldaar event. Is there anything better than sharing a good book with a child in your lap? Parents can help their children become more successful readers by reading to them the time the children are born. Research has shown that it works better than any reading drills, expensive pre-school programmes or reading instruction to help a child learn to read. Besides that, it is fun for both parent and child.

About our name: Baaldaar

Ibrahim Amin Baldar (1920-1998) is the legendary author to the first official Kurdish textbook Elfubéy Niwé (The New Alphabet) (link). Baldar was a passionate schoolteacher who was eager to go the extra distance to be more productive. He was only 31 years of age, when the Iraqi ministry of Education accepted the reformed Kurdo-Arabic writing system for Kurdish language. Baldar published the Kurdish textbook Elfubéy Niwé for primary schools in 1951. This textbook has been upgraded and republished over 36 times. This book is a turning point in Kurdish history of education. Many great Kurdish scholars ever since began their elementary school education with this same textbook.

Workshop for teachers

Children develop their educational foundation, confidence, and study habits during the elementary years. Whether or not their 'habit' is for success or just getting along, it depends on building a solid reading. Just like a building, an education foundation is only as solid as the foundation of understandings, basic skills, and study skills. Children books and stories help children develop a solid education foundation by using a variety of learning activities and elementary games. During a workshop, we provide teachers with the necessary tools and skills.
